The circuit itself is an an amplifier stage and offers about +14dB gain on top of the +12dB input.Ĭlone implementations of the EP-3 often have a resistive attenuator on the output cutting the net gain down to about +3dB. What makes the EP-3 such a good preamp is that you can hit it with a boosted signal (about +12dB) with clean headroom. The TIS158 is about $25 for 5, and their response is all over the map. I got 25 of them for $5 and paid too much. I've taken a lot of data comparing to the original TIS158, and the drop-in winner is. ![]() It will build a single stage amplifier stage, but I certainly wouldn't call it an EP-3 preamp. I could write a couple of pages on the Echoplex EP-3 preamp, but suffice to say that the 2N5457 is not a good choice for the circuit.
